I recently blogged about blogging - the when, the why, and the how often.
Thank you all for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts. Now that I have had the chance to digest the responses and evaluate them in light of my preferences and limitations, I see that, for better or for worse, almost everyone is more dedicated to the art of blogging (and in some ways also to the business of writing) than I am.
At the risk of being seen as a complainer who keeps beating the same horse, I do love to write and blog - that is why I am doing it (and this subject will be addressed in more detail in my upcoming post) - I just can't seem to find the time to devote to these two related pursuits every day. At least nine hours at the office, an hour walking to and from work (it really is the fastest way across Manhattan), a child and a husband and housework, a fledgling business, and an eco-living blog - I feel like I am stretching myself thin and not everything fits into my schedule every day. At this point, I have no choice and must work and, of course, my family comes first, but the rest I split up - one day this and the next day that.
What is your secret? How do you make it all work every day? Anyone lucky enough to be able to work part-time or not have to go to the office at all? How do you budget your time?
For me, I find I can devote a few hours each weekend to my blogs. During the weekdays, however, I'm too swamped with my other duties (working and family). I also try to fit in my writing whenever I can (as well as reading); usually I can manage this during my lunch hour at work; but this isn't always possible depending on my work load for the day. When you have so many other obligations and such, all you can is what you can.
ReplyDeleteIt is soooo difficult when you are working and/or bringing up a family... For me, I am now lucky that both those stages in life have passed but then, I still seem to run out of time to do everything I want... sigh... Oh well.
ReplyDeleteI don't budget my time. I decide what's most important in any given moment, and do that. WHen I find a few spare minutes, I blog ahead.
ReplyDeleteI stay home with my kids, which helps, but it's hard to do more than blog at those times. So . . . no good answers here.
I totally understand where you're coming from. I also work a full-time job and am married (the hubby doesn't like it when I ignore him completely!). I find that when I sit down to write, it works best for me if I spend the first 30 minutes blogging and networking. Then I jump into my book and write for as long as I can before I have to do something else.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can find some time to blog! Being a writer is not easy, that's for sure!
Thank you ladies for commenting and being supportive! I don't feel like a complete "loser" anymore - as long as I do the best I can, right?
ReplyDeleteHi! I know exactly what you mean, and like you, I found the time to blog about it (it = not having enough time), haha. I only blog once a week, that way I know I can keep it up and still have some time for my other writing endeavors. I guess it takes time to find a balance and to stop feeling guilty. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI guess after 30 years of the corporate grind, I'm finally free of the every day office and traffic. This morning however I woke early to drive over 10 miles to the place I volunteer. I used to write my blog every four days and now I'm trying for once a week so I can work on my manuscript. You sound like you are very blessed E.D.and everything will work out in time. Sometimes you have to wait for the right opportunity. I waited a long time to be able to have some free time to write--I hope you don't have to wait this long!:)
